Biography
Thomas Powers, Associate Professor in the Department of
Philosophy and the School of Public Policy and Administration, Research
Fellow with the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, is currently Director
of the Center for Science, Ethics, and Public Policy. He has published
widely on issues of ethics and morality in the computer age, with essays
appearing in leading journals such as Topoi, Journal of Nano Education,
IEEE Robotics and Automation, IEEE Intelligent Systems, and Ethics and
Information Technology. He has also held leadership positions in service
to a variety of institutions concerned with ethics and technology,
including the Committee on Bioethics and Ethics in Science of the
Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie, the American
Philosophical Association’s Committee on Philosophy and Computers, the
Board of Management for the Consortium for Socially-Relevant Philosophy
of/in Science and Engineering, and the Ethics and Human Rights Working
Group convened by the Science & Human Rights Coalition of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science.
